Christine Lo & Claire El-Mouden Update on the Discovery Wearable Studies
Christine Lo from Oxford Parkinson's Disease Centre & Claire El-Mouden are working on projects to use technology to better monitor Parkinson's. Claire is setting up a sleep study which aims to improve diagnosis and monitoring of sleep by using at at-home monitoring system. The study is recruiting people with Parkinson's and/or REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder (RBD) for the study. For further information about taking part, please email sleep.wearables@nhs.net.
Christine is working on developing our smartphone app which uses movement and sound sensors within a smartphone to monitor Parkinson's progression. They have already shown they can distinguish people with Parkinson's, people with REM Sleep disorder and healthy controls. They are now hoping to roll out the app and are looking for volunteers. To learn more please email sleep.wearables@nhs.net.
Djordje Gveric Parkinson’s UK Brain Bank - A vital gift
Djordje Gveric from the Parkinson’s Tissue Bank at Imperial College London discusses the importance of brain donation to Parkinson's research. You can learn more about brain donation, including how to register here.
Laura Parkkinen - A new test for Parkinson's
Dr Laura Parkkinen heads the Neuropathology arm of OPDC. Here she discusses a new test for Parkinson’s that measures the “stickiness” of alpha-synuclein; one of the key proteins in Parkinson's, in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This same protein forms sticky clumps known as Lewy bodies within the brain cells of people with Parkinson's and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Read more about the test.
Francesca Bowring - Centre-PD Top 10 Priorities for Parkinson’s Research Study
Francesca Bowring, is a research nurse within the discovery project and project manager for Centre-PD. She is working to produce an up-to-date survey to reflect what current participants in Parkinson’s research and their friends/family would most like answered by research. If you would like participate, you can: Download the survey and post/scan it to Francesca or; Fill in the online version.
Dr Mark Kelly - How common are Parkinson’s dyskinesia in the Discovery Cohort?
Dr. Mark Kelly is a researcher at the Oxford Parkinson’s Disease Centre. His research with the Oxford Discovery Project, led by Professor Michele Hu, focuses on the side effects of dopaminergic therapies, including impulse control behaviours, exploring the predictors of the effects, and clinically characterizing the impact they have on patients.
Dr Brent Ryan - Screen your stem cell: Drug discovery for Parkinson's
Dr Brent Ryan is working with the Oxford Parkinson's Disease Centre to grow cells in the lab using skin biopsy samples donated by our cohort members. He is then looking at differences in cells from people with Parkinson's and healthy controls to look for new Parkinson's drug therapies.
Michael Lawton - Defining Parkinson's Subtypes
Michael Lawton is a medical statistician working for the Oxford Parkinson's Disease Centre at Bristol University's School of Social and Community Medicine. Here he explains how he using statistical methods with the OPDC cohort and the Tracking Parkinson's Study to look for patterns in Parkinson's and better define subtypes of the condition.
2017 OPDC Participants' Day, September 4 2017, Jury's Inn, Oxford
OPDC Scientists and Clinicians talk about different aspects of our research into Parkinson's. Talks covered links between Parkinson's and sleep, development of wearable technology and drug discovery/repurposing.
OPDC Highlights 2017
A short video highlighting the key research being carried out at OPDC. Featuring OPDC researchers discussing work on drug discovery/repurposing, sleep disorders, wearable technology and stem cell techniques to gorw neurons and microglia in the lab.
OPDC-inspired Parkinson's trials coming soon (2017)
OPDC clinical lead, Dr Michele Hu, on how we are working with our cohort and how we hope to repurpose drugs, already approved for other conditions, to improve not only the symptoms of people with Parkinson's, but also hope to slow down the progression of the condition.
Impulse control disorder in Parkinson’s (2017)
Dr Mark Kelly's research has been mainly looking at some of the current medications available for Parkinson's. Here he discusses a side-effect of one of those medications called impulse control disorder.
Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD): a window into early Parkinson’s (2017)
Dr Tom Barber on his research into REM sleep behaviour disorder and how this can give us insights into early Parkinson's.
What is the OPDC doing to improve your sleep? (2017)
We know that sleep is important for day-to-day activities, memory and attention. Dr Christine Lo is working at the Oxford Parkinson's Disease Centre on a project to look at using wearable devices to study sleep in detail in REM-sleep Behaviour Disorder and Parkinson's.
Could inflammation be important to Parkinson’s? (2017)
Dr Sally Cowley works at OPDC growing neurons and other important cells from skin samples donated in biopsies from members of our cohort. Here she discusses her work on microglia, the vacuum cleaners of the brain.
Novel Parkinson’s therapies in the Oxford Discovery pipeline (2017)
Professor Richard Wade-Martins discusses how dopamine neurons grown in a dish in our labs are helping us to understand of these cells are affected in Parkinson's.
