Former Staff
The contributions of women staff have largely been overlooked throughout the history of the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics (established in 2006), and its predecessors, the Laboratory of Physiology (established in 1883) and Department of Human Anatomy (established in 1893), hereafter referred to collectively as DPAG. Here we celebrate 27 inspirational women that worked in DPAG, many of whom were also students with us. These women were nominated by former colleagues and students and many of them were ground-breaking either in terms of their research, or in being the first woman to achieve a specific role or status.
We have verified our information either directly with the women themselves or through formal online sources such as obituaries in order to ensure accuracy as best possible. Unfortunately, as women were often not celebrated during their lifetime, their timelines are, in some instances, an approximation, and we do not have a photograph of Florence Buchanan. Any issues or omissions from these profiles can be raised by emailing communications@dpag.ox.ac.uk. We now give equal prominence to the current women of DPAG in news articles and termly profiles to ensure that there is a lasting archive of their contributions and achievements.
