Have you ever wondered how you can follow a conversation with a friend in a noisy café? Or do you find this a real struggle?
The Walker Group has published a new perspectives article in Biology exploring how we use pitch - the perceived tone of a voice - to focus on a single sound source in noisy environments. The article proposes a framework for integrating findings from human and animal studies to better understand the neural mechanisms giving rise to pitch-based selective listening, and how this process deteriorates with ageing and hearing loss.
This team effort was co-lead by DPhil students Joel Ward and Veronica Tarka, with contributions from Research Scientist Dr Artem Diuba.
