Congratulations are in order for Professor Randy Bruno, who has been awarded an AMS Professorship. The AMS Professorship Scheme provides a package of support to biomedical and healthcare researchers taking up a full Professorship in the UK.

Professor Randy Bruno joined DPAG in January 2022 as Professor of Neuroscience, following an Associate Professorship in Neuroscience at Columbia University. Professor Bruno’s research tackles the question of computation of behaviour in each of the cerebral cortex layers. The microcircuitry of the cerebral cortex is responsible for our ability to sense the world, apply what knowledge we learn, make decisions accordingly, and execute movements in response. However, the precise functions of the cortical layers remain unknown. 

The AMS Professorship will enable Professor Bruno to distinguish different plausible computational roles of cortical layers in behaviour and mechanistic theories of how learning alters cortical circuits. These efforts will also facilitate better understanding of brain disorders, by identifying potential failure points and therapeutic targets.

On receipt of his award, Professor Bruno said: “It is a tremendous honour for me to receive this Professorship from the Academy of Medical Sciences. This award will greatly facilitate the move of my research program to the United Kingdom and enhance my ability to contribute to the UK’s and Oxford’s impressive research communities.”
