The Medical Sciences Division's Teaching Excellence Awards scheme recognises and rewards excellence in teaching, supervision, the organisation and development of teaching, and support for teaching and learning, within a research-intensive environment.

Two senior DPAG academics have been awarded Medical Sciences Teaching Excellence Awards, which recognise outstanding contributions to education in the Division, as well as providing funding for educational projects.

Emeritus Associate Professor Jeremy Taylor has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding work and contribution to the development of the preclinical medicine course, and for a lifetime dedicated to the education of generations of medical students.

“He stood out because of his breadth of knowledge of the course and his adaption of modern teaching methods whilst challenging the students and keeping standards at the very highest level” [Senior Academic]

On receipt of his award, Prof Taylor said: "Our teaching relies on some fantastic colleagues in the department and particularly in the MSTC. We are also incredibly fortunate to teach some of the brightest and best students."

Deputy Head of Department Associate Professor Helen Christian has been awarded an Excellent Teacher Award for consistent excellence in teaching. The award reflects very positive student feedback about the online teaching resources and live Teams Q&A she ran during the lockdown period while students were studying from home.

On receipt of her award, Prof Christian said: "Last year there was a lot of new education IT to get to grips within a short space of time, and I am glad the extra effort I went to incorporate new flexible and inclusive teaching approaches helped the student learning experience in challenging times."
