Can 3D models of brain-on-a-chip help us developing new treatments for incurable diseases? Dr Mootaz Salman tells us about his research journey trying to develop new treatments for brain disorders using humanised models. Dr Mootaz M. Salman is a Junior Group Leader in Cellular Neuroscience at the Kavli Institute for Nanoscience Discovery, where he also serves as a Research Lecturer and Leverhulme Research Fellow in Cellular Neuroscience at the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics.
Dr Salman delivered his talk in Arabic as part of continuous efforts to promote cutting-edge science to people from underprivileged backgrounds around the Middle East. Dr Salman said: “I believe that science is the best language to build stronger communities. Despite being my very first scientific talk in Arabic, I had a great time engaging with very enthusiastic and driven people in Baghdad”.

Dr Salman was most recently a keynote speaker at the "World Innovation Summit for Neurodegenerative Diseases: Opportunities and Challenges in Medicine: WISDOM” at the Institute of Quantum Biophysics in Korea on 8 July 2023 where he delivered "Defining mechanisms of blood-brain barrier dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases using advanced brain-on-a-chip models".
