It begins with the definition of lineal analysis followed by a discussion of methods of lineage analysis. It then presents examples of lineage analysis conducted in the vertebrate central nervous system (CNS). Lineage analysis of the retina has shown that retinal progenitors are multipotent, most likely through the final cell division; the pattern of cell divisions can be symmetric or asymmetric with respect to the mitotic behavior of daughter cells; and postmitotic retinal cells migrate radially with relatively little tangential migration.
