DPAG has been ranked world number one for Anatomy and Physiology in the 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject for the second year in a row.

Published annually, the QS World University Rankings by Subject ranks the world's top universities in individual subject areas, based on four performance indicators: academic reputation; employer reputation; research citations per paper; and H-index.

In fact, DPAG is the only Department within the Medical Sciences Division to have been ranked number one in the world.

The Division itself has been ranked 2nd in the world, and the University as a whole has also been ranked world number one in three other subjects: Archaeology, English Literature and Language, and Geography. This makes Oxford one of only three universities to come top in more than one subject, placing it alongside Harvard and MIT.

The department's ranking is particularly spectacular given that UK universities topped the QS world rankings this year in predominantly humanities subject areas.

David Paterson, Head of Department, remarked, “It is very pleasing to be ranked number one again and be amongst the world's best universities. This index is predominately driven by output metrics, and we performed very well on citations per paper and H index citations. The Department's international academic reputation is due to the outstanding performance of our academics in research and teaching, and our support staff, who have all made our graduates highly employable”.
