The Medical Sciences Teaching Excellence Awards scheme recognises and rewards excellence in teaching, supervision, the organisation and development of teaching, and support for teaching and learning, within a research-intensive environment.

Three DPAG academics have been awarded Medical Sciences Teaching Excellence Awards, to be received at a ceremony taking place on Wednesday 23 October 2019.

Dr Michael Gilder - Excellent Teacher Award. Nominated for transforming the teaching of anatomy to Graduate-Entry Medical students and delivering an organised, tailored programme of seminars and prosection sessions. This effort was recognised by students in their feedback. Also nominated by Year 1 Pre-clinical students in 2017-18 and 2018-19 based on the quality of his teaching.

It is wonderful to have been granted an 'Excellent Teacher' award. Teaching the medical and biomedical sciences students is incredibly enjoyable. Working with the Graduate-Entry medical students in particular has been especially rewarding. It is marvellous to think I may have been able to help them in some way, as they pursue their demanding and challenging course. Many thanks must to go my colleagues who teach and support the teaching of anatomy and neuroanatomy alongside me, it is a great privilege to work with them. - Dr Gilder

Associate Professor Lisa Heather - Excellent Teacher Award. Nominated for her enthusiastic development of the metabolism teaching, and her delivery and refinement of the Molecules thread of the Year 1 Biomedical Sciences course. This effort was recognised by consistent good feedback from undergraduate students. Also nominated by Year 1 Pre-clinical students in 2017-18 and 2018-19, and Year 1 Biomedical Sciences students in 2018-19, based on the quality of her teaching.

It is an honour to be given this Teaching Excellence Award. This is only my second year of lecturing, and I have found it a rewarding and enjoyable experience teaching the Pre-clinical Medicine and Biomedical Sciences students. We redesigned this course two years ago, and it's extremely gratifying to see that the students appreciate how we communicate the science and understand concepts we are trying to convey. - Prof Heather
