Head of Department Professor David Paterson announces the renewal of DPAG's Athena Swan Silver award for the department's commitment to an inclusive and diverse working environment and the progression of the careers of women in science.

David Paterson headshotDPAG is proud to announce that we have been awarded renewal of our Athena Swan Silver award in recognition of our continued commitment to the advancement of gender equality within the department.

The process is rigorous and our application included a comprehensive self-assessment through analysis of qualitative and quantitative data and feedback from both staff and students to identify areas where we have made progress and where we need to concentrate our future efforts. Of particular note, we were commended on our anti-bullying and harassment campaign, staff and student consultation, introduction of social activities, celebration of PSS colleagues, use of rainbow lanyards and increase in gender-neutral imagery, and our ambitious action plan sets out our goals to continue this progress.

Thank you to DPAG’s Athena Swan self-assessment team for their work on our application, and to Katherine Corr (MSD Athena SWAN Facilitator) and Sally Baden (Gender Equality and Athena SWAN Policy Adviser) for their advice and guidance throughout the process.  Thanks also to those who took part in working groups, focus groups, surveys, AdvanceHE Membership logo AS Silverand workshops, provided quotations or case studies, and took time to review and comment on the draft application. 

Finally, a big thank you to Louise Cotterell and Sarah de Val and everyone in DPAG for embracing our new initiatives that are helping to effect positive cultural change within the Department.
