Jakub Tomek receiving his award

Many congratulations to Jakub Tomek, who has been awarded a coveted 3Rs prize by the European Commission. He is pictured above receiving his prize from MEP Tilly Metz.

Jakub comments, 'I’m honoured to receive this prestigious award from the European Partnership for Alternative Approaches (EPAA)! It’s been incredible to see the awarded ToR-ORd model adopted by research labs worldwide and embraced by industry—and this award really feels like the perfect culmination and extension of that journey. Developing computational models like this can be incredibly demanding at times, so I’m very grateful to the EPAA and the research community for recognizing the utility of our work. The overwhelmingly positive response at the EPAA conference where I received the award made it all even better, and I could engage with key regulators and industry leaders.

The 3Rs principle in research is essential for high-quality and ethical research, and computational modelling plays a key role in driving meaningful progress. Finally, the award gives us extra motivation to finalize the publication on a new model of human cardiac muscle cell that I've been working on for the last five years with some of the best people in the world. I believe it will bring an even bigger leap forward than ToR-ORd did—stay tuned!'
