Our Head of Department, Professor David Paterson has been awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws by the University of Otago, New Zealand. Conferring an Honorary Degree is a recognition of the University’s most outstanding graduates and those who have brought great credit to the University through their achievements.

Professor Paterson travelled to Dunedin to accept his Honorary Degree at a graduation ceremony during which he also gave a speech. He commented, ‘It is a great honour to receive an honorary degree from the university that laid the foundation for my subsequent academic career.’

Professor Paterson graduated from Otago with a Diploma in 1979, before studying at the University of Western Australia and Oxford.

The University of Otago’s Vice-Chancellor Grant Robertson is proud that Professor Paterson’s career, which has taken him across the world, started at Otago. He said, ‘David is a very active member of our alumni community, and takes a keen interest in Otago people and all that we do. We are always pleased to see our alumni making a difference in the world and he has certainly done that.’
