Royal Society Newton International Fellow
Niyas Salam (M. A. Niyas) is currently a Royal Society Newton International Fellow in the group of Prof. Dame Molly Stevens at the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics (DPAG) and the Kavli Institute for Nanoscience Discovery, University of Oxford (from 2025). His research focuses on creating functional microrobotic swarms for targeted therapeutic delivery. Niyas completed his PhD (summa cum laude) in the group of Prof. Frank Würthner at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, Germany (2019–2024), where he worked on the supramolecular chemistry of nanographenes. His doctoral research spanned organic synthesis, supramolecular assembly, atomic permeation, and the development of photofunctional materials—combining both experimental and computational approaches. Prior to this, Niyas obtained his integrated BS–MS dual degree in Chemistry and Biology from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Thiruvananthapuram (IISER TVM), India (2014–2019). During this time, he worked with Prof. Mahesh Hariharan on crystal engineering, investigating noncovalent interactions through both experimental and theoretical methods to understand and design organic photofunctional crystals.
