Hearty congratulations to Catherine King, who has won this year's Gotch Memorial Prize.
Founded by friends of the late Francis Gotch, MA, D.Sc., FRS, Waynflete Professor of Physiology, the Gotch Memorial Prize is awarded to the graduate student in the field of Physiology with the best D.Phil transfer of status report.
Catherine says, 'I’m delighted to have received the Gotch Memorial Prize for my Transfer of Status write-up. I’m studying in the Riley group for a DPhil in cardiovascular science (funded by the British Heart Foundation), and am investigating ways in which we can modulate the clearance of immune cells from the heart after myocardial infarction (heart attack). Immune cells are important for cardiac repair, but this process also leads to long-term scarring which puts extra strain on the heart, often leading to heart failure further down the line. My research aims to help understand how we can alter this by promoting clearance of immune cells via the lymphatic system to decrease the prevalence of heart failure after myocardial infarction.'
