Saumya Maheshwari

MScR Student

I am an intercalating medical student, having completed a preclinical BSc in Medical Sciences from The University of St Andrews.

I am currently reading for an MScR in Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, working in the Wade-Martins group. My project focuses on developing novel therapeutic compounds for Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA), a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder of late childhood, presently without treatment. Utilising FRDA patient-derived iPSC models, we hope to investigate how the pharmacological inhibition of specific epigenetic machinery involved in FRDA pathology impacts disease phenotypes in otherwise inaccessible sensory neurons. By doing so, we hope to develop a successful therapy for those affected by the disorder.

Upon completion of my project, I will return to my medical degree to finish the clinical years of my studies.
