Melissa Bowerman

SMA Trust Career Development Fellow

I am originally from Canada where I completed my Ph.D. in Dr Rashmi Kothary's lab at the University of Ottawa (2006-2012). I next undertook a first postdoctoral fellowship in Dr Cédric Raoul's group at the Institut des Neurosciences de Montpellier in France (2012-2014). I am presently undertaking a second postdoctoral fellowship in Pr Matthew Wood's group (2014-present)

My research is focused on neurodegenerative and neuromuscular disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and Andermann syndrome.  The central thematic of my research is to identify novel pathological pathways that contribute to the pathophysiology of these diseases and to investigate therapeutic strategies to correct the identified defects.

My current projects are:

  1. Developing a cell-penetrating peptide for the delivery of antisense oligonucleotides for SMA therapy.
  2. Investigating the pathogenic role of the TWEAK/Fn14 in denervation-induced muscular atrophy in ALS and SMA.
  3. Performing a comprehensive analysis of metabolic and circadian perturbations in SMA.
  4. Investigating common pathogenic pathways and therapy for ALS and SMA.
  5. Identifying motoneuron-specific defects in Andermann syndrome.
