My own research is focused on ketone metabolism in heart. The interaction between D-beta-hydroxybuturate (βHB) metabolism and glycogen stores is unknown, although human studies have indicated that the glycogen availability may affect the ability of muscle to oxidise ketone body. We proposed that myocardial glycogen would supply anaplerotic substrates, via pyruvate, to increase ketone body oxidation. Consequently, the effect of varying cardiac glycogen content on βHB oxidation and glucose utilization have been determined in the isolated rat heart.
