Until recently, iron levels were thought to be regulated solely by systemic homeostasis. However, the Lakhal-Littleton group have shown that iron is also controlled at a local level and that dysfunction of this regulation can result in impaired tissue function and disease phenotypes. My project aims to investigate the effects of perturbations in local iron homeostasis in abdominal aortic aneurysm. My experiments have centred around elucidating the mechanism by which hepcidin is protective against AAA development by using conditional gene knockout animals.
