My line of research focuses on ketone bodies metabolism.
Ketone bodies are fat-derived molecules that are produced in the liver when we fast. They act both as a source of energy and as a message for some organs to adapt their fuel management.
One of my supervisors (Professor Kieran Clarke) developed a ketone drink which, for the very first time, allows us to quickly and safely induce ketone blood levels like the ones observed after many days of fasting or following a strict ketogenic diet.
Since many diseases are characterised or worsened by fuel management impairments, this breakthrough opened a myriad of potential clinical applications. I am particularly interested in the potential benefits for diabetes mellitus patients.
