For my FHS project within the Mommersteeg group, I am characterising the immune response to cardiac injury in Astyanax mexicanus. The Mexican cavefish is a uniquely suited model to study heart regeneration, due to its regenerative and non-regenerative subpopulation composition. Following cardiac injury, the surface fish subpopulation can efficiently replace damaged tissue, however, similar to the adult human heart, the Pachón cavefish subpopulation cannot regenerate and forms a permanent fibrotic scar. My project involves using RNAscope to characterise the leukocytes present at specific timepoints following cryoinjury, with a focus to highlight any differences between the surface fish and Pachón cavefish subpopulations.
