\n \n\n \n \n \nA consortium directed by Dr. Kalyanam Shivkumar at UCLA has received a three-year, $8.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The consortium hopes to map the heart\u2019s nervous system, ultimately developing new treatments for cardiovascular disease.

\n \n\n \n \n \nWe depend on electrical waves to regulate the rhythm of our heartbeat. When those signals go awry, the result is a potentially fatal arrhythmia. Now, a team of researchers from the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics and Stony Brook University has found a way to precisely control these waves \u2013 using light. Their results are published in the journal Nature Photonics.
