To mark Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, the Alzheimer’s Research UK Early Career Researcher (ECR) Committee for the Thames Valley Network hosted a fantastic Open Day at the Westgate Shopping Centre in Oxford on Saturday, 27th September. The event aimed to engage the public in conversations about brain health, dementia research, and the many ways people can get involved.

From Play-Doh mitochondria and munching microglia to pipe cleaner neurons and spot-the-difference MRI games, the event featured a wide range of interactive stalls. With microscopes, brain hats, memory games, and of course, the ever-popular giant inflatable brain, research groups from across Oxford came together to inspire curiosity in both children and adults alike.

The volunteer team included DPAG members Ajantha Abey, Katie Thomas, Sophie Farrow, Brent Ryan, Rachel Heon-Roberts, Sarah Franks, Elly Robles Rodriguez, Amelia Smith, Nicole Li, Kalina Naidoo and Hend Almunaidi.

It was a long day, but the enthusiasm and interest from the public made it more than worthwhile. We had many thought-provoking conversations and, most importantly, we helped show that science can be not only important—but fun and accessible to everyone!
