\n \n \n \nA consortium directed by Dr. Kalyanam Shivkumar at UCLA has received a three-year, $8.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The consortium hopes to map the heart\u2019s nervous system, ultimately developing new treatments for cardiovascular disease.

\n \n \n \nWhen does our heart first start to beat? Until now, researchers thought that the first time our heart muscle contracted to beat was at eight days after conception in mice, which equates to around day 21 of a human pregnancy.

\n \n \n \nWe depend on electrical waves to regulate the rhythm of our heartbeat. When those signals go awry, the result is a potentially fatal arrhythmia. Now, a team of researchers from the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics and Stony Brook University has found a way to precisely control these waves \u2013 using light. Their results are published in the journal Nature Photonics.
