Oxford Sparks, Oxford Online Public Science, has a very good resource page on public engagement. Oxford Sparks is also running public engagement training and events.


UNIQ Summer schools at the University of Oxford is a programme of free residentials in July and August for Year 12 students currently studying at UK state schools.

As part of Oxford's on-going commitment to engage with schools, the University has developed a programme to simplify communication between the University and all schools in the United Kingdom. Each Oxford College is linked to a Local Authority to ensure that each school has a first point of contact within the University.

Oxford Pathways

The Pathways Programme is an initiative coordinated by the Colleges of the University of Oxford, with support from the Sutton Trust. The programme aims to provide information, advice and guidance on higher education and Oxford to academically able students, and staff members, in non-selective state schools with little history of student progression to Oxford. All of our events are run in Oxford, and are free to attend.


Become a STEM Ambassador and get involved in a huge range of activities, which can all have an impact on young people’s learning and enjoyment of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).



TESconnect is the online portal for the Times Educational Supplement. It provides access to an online ‘Teaching Resources’ section where teachers share and download free lesson plans, classroom resources, etc.TESconnect offers content to support and inspire teachers across the world by giving them free access to the best teaching resources available. The website quotes over 2.5 million registered users in over 274 countries, a huge potential audience that could significantly extend the reach of Oxford’s open content directly within the teaching community.

Soapbox Science

Soapbox Science is an annual public science communication event that transforms public areas into an arena for public learning and scientific debate. The event follows the format of London Hyde Park’s Speaker’s Corner, which is historically an arena for public debate. With Soapbox Science, we want to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy, learn from, heckle, question, probe, interact with and be inspired by some of our leading scientists. 

Public Engagement Academy

NCCPE has launched their first Public Engagement Academy. The academy is ‘aimed at anyone who is working to enhance the quality, visibility and impact of public engagement with research within their organisation.’ They also will help researchers develop a working plan on engagement.

Early Career Academic Outreach Network

This network aims to connect early career academics with opportunities to get involved with outreach in Oxford and further afield, as well as to provide them with appropriate training opportunities and recognition for their work at an institutional level. Oxford Hub catalyses students’ involvement with social and environmental challenges in Oxford and around the world. It is part of a national network, Student Hubs, working to create a culture change in UK universities so that student-powered social change becomes the norm and not the exception – inspiring socially active citizens for life. OxHub inspires students about their power and potential to shape a better world through issue-led conferences and speaker events; connect them to opportunities to make a difference during their time at university, and support them to become civic leaders in their future lives and careers.

Widening Participation

Volunteer and paid opportunities are available for postgraduate students throughout the year. A number of programmes are run, focused on working with young people form local schools and colleges. The Widening Participation team will offer information, advice and guidance to students through regular workshops, seminars and residential opportunities. Postgraduate students could design and deliver a bespoke session about their subject or field or research, support students during one of our staff led workshops, work on a residential during the Easter holiday or work for us as an intern. IntoUniversity, an award winning UK charity, is opening an new centre in Blackbird Leys and will be looking for tutors, mentors and volunteers to support young people enrolled in there programmes. At each local centre IntoUniversity offers an innovative programme that supports young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to attain either a university place or another chosen aspiration.
