Head of Department Professor David Paterson unveiled an Oxfordshire Blue Plaque commemorating Sir Charles Scott Sherrington (1857 – 1952), OM, Nobel Laureate, founder of neurophysiology, on Thursday 28 April at 9 Chadlington Road, Oxford.

Researchers from the Oxford Parkinson’s Disease Centre (OPDC) recently hosted Caroline Rassell, Parkinson’s UK Chief Executive; David Dexter, Associate Research Director; Trustee Board members, Gary Shaughnessy (Chair) and Sally Bromley; together with members of the Parkinson’s UK Oxford Branch committee, for a visit to showcase the research being carried out in Oxford.

Sarah Teichmann FRS, world leader in computational applications to human health and pioneer of single cell research delivered the second lecture in the series to honour John Scott Haldane, known as the father of oxygen therapy. The lecture was followed by the unveiling of celebrated artist Philip de László's portrait of Haldane by Dr Teichmann and Haldane's great-grandson Terence Mitchison. The Department was delighted to welcome several of J.S. Haldane's descendants to both events.

Professor Dame Kay Davies, Professor of Genetics, first woman appointed Dr Lee's Professor of Anatomy at Oxford, first woman to become Head of Department for DPAG, University-wide champion of equality, and award winning scientist known for her work on Duchenne muscular dystrophy, has 'retired' after a lifetime's research, but remains Professor Emeritus at DPAG.
