Aksel Saukko-Paavola

DPhil Student

Aksel is a DPhil student in Interdisciplinary Bioscience working in the Klemm Group. His research focuses on the role of mitochondria in the development of white adipocytes, and the changes they undergo to their metabolic and cell biological state to support the mobilisation of sugars and amino acids into fatty acids or triacylglycerols (TAGs).

He uses a mixture of biochemical, imaging and proteomic methods to probe the role of mitoguardin-2, an outer membrane protein responsible for generating ER-mitochondria contact sites, which surprisingly has been shown to be a key factor in the regulation of lipid biosynthesis.

Aksel obtained an MSc in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry at the University of Oxford, where he conducted his Part II project in the Mellor group at the Department of Biochemistry, working on in-silico methods to study transcriptional elongation.
