Professor of Cell Biology, Director of Cardiac Sciences in the Burdon Sanderson Cardiac Science and Integrative Physiology Centre and Deputy Head of our Department Manuela Zaccolo has been made a Fellow of Italy's Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti. The ceremony, in which new members were welcomed, will be held in May 2023.
The Institute was created by Napoleon for the Kingdom of Italy in 1810. Following the annexation of Venetia to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866, it became recognised as one of the most prestigious Italian Academies. The Academy is divided into two Classes: the Class of Sciences and the Class of Humanities. Fellows are formally appointed by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities after having been elected by the Assembly of the members.
The aim of the Institute is to promote and safeguard the sciences, arts and literature and to foster scientific research. Its activities include monthly academic meetings, where fellows present their studies to be published in the magazine entitled 'Atti dell’Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti'. The Institute runs regular meetings, conferences, and seminars, publishes and prints books, and owns a rich library and several notable archives.
