Ji-Long Liu was trained in Beijing, China: Forest Conservation (BSc, Beijing Forestry University), Animal Physiology and Biochemistry (MSc, China Agricultural University), and Reproductive Biology (PhD, The Chinese Academy of Sciences). He continued on animal cloning with Professor Jerry Yang at the University of Connecticut, USA.
He started to work on amphibian oocytes with Professor Joseph Gall at Carnegie Institution Department of Embryology (Baltimore, Maryland, USA). Contagiously, Ji-Long fell interest in the Cajal body, a nuclear organelle discovered in human neuron 100 years ago. In searching a model system for studying the Cajal body, Ji-Long turned his eyes into fruit flies because of the potential of combining genetic and molecular approaches.
Setting up a laboratory at MRC Functional Genomics Unit in Oxford in 2007, Ji-Long is interested in everything about fruit flies, both for exploring fundamental cell biology and for modeling human disease.
