Cardiac Science

DPAG has particular strengths in cardiac science, and members of this theme are recognized internationally for their pioneering approaches to systems biology and to computational modelling of the heart

The Burden Sanderson Cardiac Sciences Centre, founded in 2005 and co-directed by Richard Vaughan-Jones and David Paterson, is dedicated towards a multifaceted approach to understanding the physiology, development and repair of the heart.

There is world-class expertise in:

  • proton signalling and intracellular pH control in relation to physiology/pathophysiology of the heart and to cancer
  • neurobiology of the heart, particularly the nervous control of the heart and the functional circuitry of cardiac arrhythmias
  • cardiac NMR spectroscopy and MRI imaging to study metabolic events in the heart
  • cardiac-derived stem cell therapy
